I had the chance to get a sneak peek of one of New York's newest hotels—in Queens. Yes, the Z New York Hotel is Long Island City's second boutique hotel. Like all Manhattanites, I was a little apprehensive about going to check it out. How would I get there? How long it would take? But with multiple subway lines a a few blocks away, it was quick and easy.
Designer Andre Escobar took the idea of travel and created an eclectic, industrial chic look. A custom check-in desk made of vintage luggage stands in front of a mural of the City Hall subway station. On the wall above the elevators, a train station departure board posts fictional times to destinations like France, Germany, and Spain, while an oversized black crystal chandelier adds a bit a glamour.
Meanwhile, the rooms bring the hotel's location into play, each one featuring one of three different black and white murals—Billie Holiday singing, the Rockettes kicking, or a taxi cab driving.
But the real showstoppers are the rooftop bar (of course, with some impressive Manhattan views), and the beer garden, set to open soon.
It's definitely worth a trip across the river.
