Constantly, I am asked the same question, in different iterations: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? What’s your dream destination? The reality is, I want to venture anywhere I haven’t been—whether it’s Helsinki or Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Living very close to LaGuardia Airport, the sounds of planes overhead have now become mere background noise, and cause me to feel guilty that I am not ensconced on one of them, off to explore a new destination. After all, I am the girl who while on vacation will suddenly panic lying in my hotel room one night that I don’t have another trip lined up after the one I am in the midst of.
Now that we are firmly mired in holiday soirees, shopping sprees, and tree gawking through the end of the year, my mind has already jumped to 2013 and the potential travel it will hold. Will this finally be the year I make it back to Paris, a city I last wandered through when I was too poor to enjoy more than a croissant and table wine? Can I finally stop feeling lame I’ve never been to Japan? Is it time to drink a proper Old Fashioned in Louisville?
So far, I’ve a got a Jet Blue flight to the Bahamas to look forward to in January (it’s a perk having equally wanderlust-riddled friends who want to celebrate their birthdays in the Caribbean) but beyond that, the year is full of promise—and hopefully magical meals and charming hotels—no matter where the plane is headed.
What’s on your bucket list for 2013?
