I have never been to an awards ceremony before. Of course, I’ve done my share of watching them on TV and live-tweeting them, but I’ve never sat in an auditorium amongst the very talented and well-deserving people. Luckily, that all changed with last night’s 10th annual Hospitality Design Awards ceremony at the Grand Hyatt New York. The event, sponsored by Durkan and Interiors from Spain, celebrated our deserving finalists and winners, who are also featured in our June issue.
Although winners and finalists had been announced beforehand, there were some small surprises: emcee and Hospitality Design magazine’s Editorial Director Michael Adams’s music choices for each finalist and winner was one; raffling off an all-expense paid trip to Spain (courtesy of Interiors from Spain) was another; and most importantly, the much coveted Best of Show award was announced.
Naturally, we saved the best for last.
Our judges looked through 400 entries, narrowed those down, and still this property stood out for good reason. The Alpina Gstaad in Switzerland, our Best of Show winner, is a show stopper. A luxurious chalet in the Swiss wilderness, the hotel offers beautiful amenities highlighted by detailed woodwork, including the Panorama Suite, which has its own spa. The photos of the space are jaw droppingly gorgeous. My boyfriend sitting next to me couldn’t contain his excitement. Upon seeing the guestroom, he confided that he was moving there immediately.
The masterminds behind the Alpina Gstaad include: architecture firm Jaggi & Partner AG, Switzerland; interior design firm The Gallery HBA, London; and owner of the hotel, the Grand Hotel Alpina AG. A group that deserves all the accolades awarded to them for being able to collaborate on a alluring hospitality space that embodies the HD Awards. Congrats to all!
We look forward to seeing how next year’s crop of winners and finalists will wow us once again!
