Here at HD HQ, we are constantly seeking out and sharing the ways design is changing, and our industry’s response to them. Some people may even call these trends. In fact, in our December issue (out soon!) we highlight a bunch of of them.
While working on it, I was reminded of the “Design is the New Currency” symposium, organized by Pratt Institute and hosted at the Whitney Museum, that I attended in November. David Rockwell, founder and president of Rockwell Group (along with interior designer Juan Montoya, artist Michele Oka Doner, and MAC Cosmetics‘ creative director James Gager) tackled temporality’s importance in design. Here are five projects that showcase the intriguing ideas of specificity, transformation, and flexibility.

With Thanksgiving this week I was thinking back on what I was grateful for, and a weekend away in October came to mind.
Leaf peeping, for one. It’s a thing—really—with sightseeing trains and all. I wasn’t aware of this trend, which is why I was surprised when my friends and I wanted to do a girls’ weekend last month, and found every hotel in Upstate New York and Connecticut booked. I guess we city-dwellers crave pumpkin and apple picking, fall colors, and just some fresh air.

We didn’t care as much about the leaves (even though they were a nice bonus): We were looking for a spa, hiking, and some good laughs. We discovered everything we wanted at the Emerson Resort & Spa in Mt. Tremper, New York. I grew up in northern New Jersey, and I never ventured much to upstate New York—we had all the leaves and pumpkins and farms you need, so I wasn’t aware of the Emerson. Continue reading →

It’s been a trying week for many of us in this country, which means it’s as important as ever to not only celebrate but pay tribute to people who are making a difference. This Tuesday, November 15th, we did just that as we celebrated hospitality veterans who have changed our industry, and the world, during our 28th annual Platinum Circle Awards Gala, held at New York’s Marriott Marquis.

This year, more than 500 people came together for our black tie affair to recognize career achievements and what makes hospitality—an inclusive, welcoming industry that supports innovation and people who push the envelope—so important. Indeed, it’s an industry that brings people together in unexpected ways, and on Tuesday it was no different as we honored three industry veterans; a firm that continues to reshape design after three decades; and a designer turned philanthropist who is making a positive mark on the world. After what is being called the most controversial campaign in U.S. history, Donald Trump’s surprising defeat of Hillary Clinton for the presidency was a great shock to more than half the voters (insert nationwide protests and Hillary’s winning of the popular vote), but also a positive outcome for some 59 million others in what is being called a “whitelash” in response to the status quo. There are many unknowns in terms of his policies (especially on immigration and social issues), but as reality sets in, the travel industry is starting to predict/respond to what the first hotelier as POTUS means for the next four years for tourism and growth—some are positive, others less so. When I profiled Kelly Hoppen in our August 2015 issue, she already had a prolific portfolio. She is about as well known a designer as you can get, transcending industries: hospitality, residential, home goods, TV, not to mention her work as an ambassador for the UK’s Great Britain campaign, where she promotes British creativity, business, and design overseas. In that interview, she mentioned that she was looking forward to celebrating a retrospective in collaboration with Resource Decor of her work, 40 years in the making, in 2016.
