HD Expo Countdown: Entering a New Age with VR

Posted by on April 26, 2017 in Events

We are looking forward to HD Expo, which is only a week away (!!!). This year, we’ve added something new to the mix with a virtual reality booth led by innovation and design studio ICRAVE. In collaboration with Hospitality Design magazine, the two day virtual reality-focused workshop at booth #1359 (and sponsored by RH Contract) will showcase cutting-edge visualization and digital experimentation during HD Expo, held next week in Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay. Along with demonstrations, ICRAVE is also hosting a beer pong tournament (finally, a college skill put to good use), completely in VR, starting Wednesday, May 3rd at 2 p.m.

“We created the beer pong game through our interactions with video game designers and developers,” says Elizabeth Von Lehe, director of strategy and brand architecture for the New York firm, who will be overseeing the demonstrations and the contest. Continue reading →

Gulla’s Guide: 10 Highlights from Salone

Like-minded people from all over the world united in Milan for the largest furniture fair in the world during Salone del Mobile and FuoriSalone. The city was buzzing with art and furniture installations at palazzos, churches, galleries, and at the conference center, and the transformation from fashion destination to furniture design haven was an enchanting experience.

Scooting around in my vespa between espressos and Proseccos, I discovered intricate and beautifully made items from the event. Here are a some of my favorites:

1. Pretty in Pink
The very instagrammable Le Refuge is a dreamy, jungle-inspired blush pink daybed by Parisian-Italian artist Marc Ange created as part of Wallpaper*’s Handmade exhibition.

2. Limited-Edition Furniture
Finely crafted by Italian furniture artist Mauro Mori, his Brass Tres Sculptural table for Les Ateliers Courbet and Sand table in fondante bronze  capture organic expression through curvatures and earthy hues. Continue reading →

3 Surface Trends from Coverings 2017

Coverings 2017 was held last week in Orlando, bringing together 25,000 tile and stone industry professionals and 1,100 exhibitors from 40 countries. The annual show also included ample programming, such as the HD-led “What’s Trending in Hospitality?,” with designer Stacy Garcia, Malcolm Berg of EoA, Justin Colombik from Puccini Group, and Glen Coben of Glen & Co. Architecture.

With nine miles-worth of stone, tiles, and ceramics showcased on the floor of the Orange County Convention Center, there was quite a lot of ground to cover in only a few short days. Equipped with a notebook, camera, and comfortable shoes (shoutout to Nike’s Flyknit Racer), I discovered what was trending in the surfaces industry. Although espresso, virtual reality, and even puppies abounded, some seriously eye-catching designs were what really stole my heart. Here are three trends sure to reshape interiors in the days to come:

One refreshing theme on the show floor was nature. Continue reading →

HD Expo: Rockwell Group Reimagines the Social Hub

Posted by on April 5, 2017 in Events

The Social Hub at HD Expo (Booth #5644) is the central nervous system of the show floor. In the past few years, we’ve had designs that run the gamut—a sleek retreat resembling the Delano from Morgans Hotel Group, a nod to Canopy thanks to Hilton, and the eclectic, whimsical design à la Andrew Alford’s Graduate brand. This year, we tasked Rockwell Group with creating that through-line—the very heartbeat of the show.

Of course, the New York firm is known for iconic interiors, including the latest Union Square Cafe and Nobu projects. But they’ve also won awards, including a Tony for set design for She Loves Me, and took on the gigantic task of reimagining the stage for the 81st and 82nd Academy Awards. In fact, think of the Social Hub as HD Expo’s Oscars stage.

The social hub, above all else, should be a place where people come to relax, set up meetings, and take in a few of our informal social hub discussions (more on that in a minute). Continue reading →
