When it comes to social media, there is no right way to do it but there does seem like there can be a wrong way. If only everyone could only post photos of cute babies and puppies and cat memes everyday, we’d be much better off. But it’s not that easy. In fact, designers are starting to take an interest in the medium, and because they have a long catalogue of visual content to share, social media has become a gateway to engage with clients and create new fans.
Parts and Labor Design crafted a very Instagrammable wall at LA Jackson inside the Thompson Nashville
At the Social Media and Design talk during HD Expo this month, Malcolm Berg, founder of EoA, and Danu Hassik, design director for Parts and Labor Design, discussed their strategies, best practices, their favorite accounts to follow (Somewhere I Would Like to Live for Hassik and The Sartorialist for Berg), and the importance of authenticity in a highly curated medium. We are always looking for different ways to connect people in this industry, and last year I dreamt up the idea of putting 50 people on a bus to tour the newest and greatest in New York (I mean the double-deckers in the city are always packed) with insight from the creative minds behind them. I wasn’t sure if others would find it as much fun as I hoped it would be, but it turned out to be a hit. This year we were at it again, this time in Brooklyn (full disclosure: I live there and selfishly wanted to show off the cool places in my hood) and three amazing projects. Two are HD Awards finalists, and all were featured in the recent issue of HD.
Thank you to our sponsors: Bernhardt Hospitality, Brizo, Durkan, Jaclo, Kevin Barry Fine Art, Kravet Contract, P/Kaufmann Contract, Preciosa, RH Contract, Samuelson, and Walters, for making it a great day. Continue reading →

The word is out about HD Expo‘s showstopping products and buzzworthy conference panels, where industry insiders (including designers, brand heads, developers, and more) talked top trends, providing real insights along with unique perspectives. A strong focus on guest experience was a reoccurring topic, but others went more in depth on design process, scientific impact, target audience, and collaboration. For those of you who couldn’t make it out to Vegas this year or simply need a refresher, here’s a recap from the sessions.
1. The Power of Fruitful Collaborations
The right assembled team is fundamental to the success of a project. “When we look for collaborators, we want people who can take the idea and run with it,” says Mark Harmon, founder of Auberge Resorts, while Viceroy CEO Bill Walshe says shared ideology can drive mutual and fruitful disruptions with purpose if necessary, ultimately elevating the design.
The concept of collaboration was never more clear than with the long-standing relationship between industry icons Steve Wynn and Roger Thomas. Continue reading →

We’re a week out of HD Expo, and we’re still coming down from that tradeshow high. This year the floor was buzzing, conference sessions were packed, and our keynote session featuring industry legends Steve Wynn and Roger Thomas was standing room only. Not to mention, the HD team took a field trip to see our living queen Britney Spears perform (complete with souvenir cups).
It was a good week in Vegas and, luckily for you, the editors at HD don’t prescribe to the “what happens here, stays here” Las Vegas ethos. During our time on the show floor, we spotted some innovative products. Here are seven of our favorites:
1. LED Cloud from Astele
It’s refreshing when a product stands out on the show floor in a way that makes you think “I get it.” The fixture comprises only two materials—mesh wire and smalls LEDs—but it leaves a very sophisticated, fantastical impression. Continue reading →
This year’s HD Expo is buzzing, with almost 11,000 guests and 800-plus exhibitors filling the Mandalay Bay convention center in Las Vegas. The show floor booth designs making their debuts have been in the making for months. Executed with remarkable precision and style, it’s always a treat to see all that hard work and time pay off in the form of innovative and eye-catching product showcases.
HD Expo’s Best Booth competition is always a major highlight, and this year, our Best Booth judges—Malcolm Berg, EoA Group; Craig Palacios, Bunnyfish Studio; and Kellie Sirna, Studio 11 Design—embarked onto the massive show floor to select the most thoughtful and creative booth designs.
